I grew up playing the old version. I purchased the expasions for this also. Its alot of cards, but really a blast. I love the color now, the old version was balck and white. A must have for the gamer.

  2. This is a wonderful new edition of Steve Jackson’s original boxed Illuminanti game. It’s really only good for 3 players and above, and the game play is cut-throat at best. It’s the only game I own that has suggestions for cheating in the rules. No really, cheating is encouraged. The bank eventually ends up in the middle of the table after enough shenanigans, with house rules like, “You use one finger to get/put money into the bank. One must count, slowly and clearly during the process.”

As the game progresses, the lines of power and action get quite comedic. E.g., “The Bavarian Illuminati are using the Girlie Magazines with the help Empty Vee and Feminists to crush the Republicans.” My wife walked in as my daughter said that line and commented in a shocked voice, “What are you playing?”

It’s a bit more complex than the average board game from a local retailer, but not near as complex a lot of war games are. As the game progresses each action requires a good bit of addition and subtraction to determine a winning role.

Remember whatever you do, watch out for the orbital mind control lasers. Wear a tin-foil hat.

Illuminati is quite intensely detailed. Forget having a friend explain it to you with just words. The best way to go about this learning the game is to simply play it with someone who knows what they’re doing. Once playing begins the game can be easily picked up (unless your 60+ because then you probabally cant understand any new game). Overall once you learn the basics this is an insanely fun game and has endless possibilities.

I bought this because I thought it’d be a fun gift for someone who’s into conspiracy theories. It was a fun gift, but it’ll probably never be used. We tried to play it with a group of people, but we gave up within about an hour. Its 16 or so pages of rules are extraordinarily complex. This would be a good game for someone who has a group of friends with whom he or she regularly plays board games–a group of friends who like complex rules and strategy. This is not a party game.

  5. I have one of the older sets, this set, and the CCG. This one is my favorite because I didn’t like the CCG much at all but I loved some of the cards in it. This is an expanded updated version of the original that includes some of the CCG cards.

It’s a turn based game, everyone has their base illuminati card, and each card is working towards a different goal. Whoever reaches their goal first wins.

Each card has specific alignments and powers to attack other cards and a roll of dice determines how successful your attack was.

It’s complicated and needs at least 3 players, preferably 4 or 5 for maximum fun. Hopefully people who are good friends with each other. Strategy, luck and alliances are all important in this game.

Some people won’t like it much, there are a lot of things to keep track of so you may have to really look for people to play the game with.
